I am looking for a set of spokeshaves, and I admit–my experience with them is pretty limited. I need an online dealer who has some good quality products and the Veritas just seems too pricey. Can anyone recommend a brand or better yet an online dealer?

You get what you pay for. If you think the veritas spokeshaves are expensive, then my recommendation of the Brian Boggs set from Lie Nielsen will probably blow you out of the water.
I went through the whole upgrade process on these almost 10 years ago. I started with Stanley's and moved to Record's. Both junk.
My advice.....spend the money. The veritas shaves work well, and are as inexpensive as you will find for a tool that actually works, and doesn't frustrate you into throwing it out.

Personally, I have picked up all of my spoke shaves from either antique stores of Flea markets. For between $5-$15 you can pick up a very good user. Look for dual steel on the cutting edge.

If you are looking to save money I suggest you make your own wooden spokeshave. It isn't that hard and the low angle wooden shaves work better than the metal ones in my humble opinion. I have the Veritas set and really like them, but if were to lose all of my spokeshaves the first one I would replace is the wooden one I made. Here is a link to Lee Valley for their wooden spokeshave kit. Order two and make a flat and convexed sole shave.
