I am going to make a face frame for a bookcase at one of the local libraries. Approx. dims.: 1 1/2″ wide stiles and top rail, 82″ H x 32″W. The bottom rail is about 5″. When I am complete a local glass shop will install sliding glass on a track system. My question: Should I use slip joints all around or M & T joints? I want maximum strength. I am also concerned about cutting slip joint “mortise3s” in stiles that long-probably handcut? Thanks in advance to all! Pete

hey pete,
used to do alot of face frame cabinets. i honestly would not hesitate to simply dowel the face frame you are describing. you are gluing the frame to a carcass, are you not? if so, this is time honored and very strong. the track and glass doors will ride on the floor of the cabinet and will not stress the face frame much, if at all. i agree that such long stiles would be tricky to mortise on the t-saw. the ceiling in my little shop would be too low.

Thanks!
I will consider dowels, and agrece the weight of the glass will not stress the frame.

On something this large I would use pocket screw construction and plug and sand the holes even though no one will ever see them. In the past I always dowled & glued but recently I did a large job with pocket screws amd it worked fine.
Thank you!
Pete
here, here mr. b,
i have used the face-maker pocket screw system and that has since evolved into kreg-jig type systems. i agree that pocket screws would be just fine.
really, you fill those holes...?
