Hi, Does anyone know what the size (diameter and height) of the front knob is on a Stanley No 1 plane? I bought a knob today I thought was for a Stanley No 2 but when I compared it to my No 2 I have already, it’s a little smaller. I’ve never owned a Stanley No 1 so I can’t compare it to anything.
Thanks Mike

Mike,
Don't know if this will help. This is off a LN #1. How don't know how faithful LNs specs were against the original S #1.
Height= approx. 1 15/32nds to 1 3/8th
Top diameter = approx. 1 14/32nds
Waste= 19/32nds (-)
Bottom= 22/32nds(+)
Hope this is of some help

I bought it for a paper weight; just to look at on the desk. I find I like it allot for woodworking ! A very precise little guy. Here are some pics I have laying around for different views if they can help you at all. This is a Woodcraft special anniversary edition of white bronze.
I left the two pics unreduced so it would be easy to home in on the knob. If it is too large and you have a Mac hold down the command key and click the " - " key a few times to reduce the pic size. If you have a PC maybe the same thing using the control key or try a pull down menu command.

Yeah, the front knob is not the exact same shape as a Stanley No 1 so that's why the dimensions are a little different. Thanks for the photos, they definitely help!
Hold on to that little guy, they are only going up in value.

We think alike! I bought a LN #1 for much the same reason (plus to see how it feels in the hand as a substitute for a block plane--pretty good to hands that are becoming arthiritic with hand wrapped around tote).
I can't use him one handed ; for me it is two hands. The advantage is the adjuster is more precise than on a block plane so can set up the blade to cut right where I want for small or precise cut e.g., tuning my winding sticks. Visually quite nice to look at as a bonus.rocGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )
The L-N knob and tote are only similar to the originals. They wouldn't be acceptable as replacements, however, for anyone restoring a vintage #1. I had both at one time and the Stanley was noticeably different from the Lie-Nielsen. One thing I remember was that the round brass nut was only about 5/16" in diameter, which was much smaller than the larger Stanley planes used.
I would check some photos on eBay of Stanley #1's for sale. They will give you an idea of the shape.
My type 8 Stanley #1 front knob is 1 1/4" in diameter and 1 9/32" high. Hope this helps.

Well then that solves it. It must not be a No 1 plane knob. Maybe it's a knob for a combination plane or No 48 match plane.
Thanks Mike

Mike - Lee Valley published the plans for the totes of Stanley hand planes a couple of months ago, but I'm not sure whether the plans included the knobs.
Cool, I'll have to check it out.
Thanks

Hi Mike
The knob size for a No 1 is 1 3/16" in diameter by 1 1/4" to 1 5/16" tall . For No.2 low knob 1 1/2" dia by 1 3/4" high . In the case of a tall knob No. 2, 2 1/4"high. However bear in mind that there is slight varience between planes especially No.2's I have given you the average sizes .The closest to a No 1 is the No. 98/99 knobs Jako
