Sidemount vs. Undermount metal drawer sl
I’m planning to build my version of the L&JG Stickley #89-2272 Executive Desk. My client wants flush-front drawers and metal drawer slides. I’ve not used metal drawer slides before and am trying to decide on the merits of using side mount vs. undermount metal drawer slides. I can design/construct the case accordingly. I’ve read John Mackworth’s article from FWW Sept-Oct. 2000 and William Duckworth’s article from FWW May-June 2008.
Any other thoughts on choosing one over the other?
Also, anyone know of a good source for the Hettich Quadro IW undermount slides? I only need slides for 8 drawers.
Many thanks.

For a source You could try Maverick Hardware in Eugene Oregon.
They do carry the Quadro slide , good luck .

Thanks Dusty. I used to live in Eugene until moving out here to the mountains of NE Oregon. Max
That is a beautiful desk design you will surely take some pride in building. To best illuminate your craftmanship, I would recommend using the undermount hardware. Your client will get the easy opening and closing drawers that he evidently desires, and the beauty of the drawers will be plainly seen.
Thank you. I'm with you on looks and function. What I gather from the FWW articles is that the undermount slides may be easier to install and then adjust to get the "perfect" vertical and horizontal clearances on the flush mount drawers. I'm interested in other woodworker's experience with those two issues. Max
You will see ugly metal slides, completely out of character with the rest of the furniture every time the drawer is opened if you use the side mounts. The undermounts can only be seen if you look under the drawer, or peer into the drawer cavity. Undermounts are the only thing I'd consider.
Thanks. The client doesn't seem to mind, but I agree with you on the aesthetics. I'm wrestling with two main considerations: I gather that the undermount slides may be easier to install, and adjust for vertical and horizontal clearances on the face, but I'll lose 1/2 inch of drawer depth on each drawer. Hi
I made some built ins for a bed room and I used Blumotion under mounts. Sweet!!
For your first time make a mock up so you don't mess up a nice drawer.
Thank you. Where did you get your Blumotion slides? All the good undermounts are a little spendy and I've got 8 drawers in this desk + return. Max
harley , Whether you use side mounts or under mounts , the bottom gets slotted into the side anyways with this type of construction , the slide you use may call for say 5/8" clearance under the bottom , we typically leave 1/2" for side mounts so you really won't be losing any significant ht inside the drawer box .

Thank you. I'm leaning toward the undermounts because of the fact that they're unobtrusive. I've heretofore made my own wood slides, but the client wants metal!! Go figure, right?
I have used undermount slides and the 1/2 in loss is well worth it.
Better life through Zoodles and poutine...
I have use both styles of drawer slides in my many projects, but I have used undermounts exclusively on all my projects in the last five years. If you read the articles in FWW on undermounts you know that the Blumotion are highly rated , but over priced. I have used cases of the Hettich Quadro IW and I get them from http://www.chaircitysupply.com/. It is the best source I have found ,but you may find something closer out west. If you buy the 10 pack you will get a quantity discount better then what is listed on the website. They are also an excellent source of screws for installation. Call for prices. I live in Michigan so I don't get any kick back from them, just trying to help.

Thank you. Yours is the kind of experience I was hoping to hear about. I think I'll go with the Quadro.
You can use your table saw and dado head for the cutouts on the drawer bottoms and I made a plexiglass jig for the hole to drill in the back of the drawer. This website will give you all the dimensions http://www.hettichamerica.com/hus/PDF/Catalog/chp3/HUS_083_172.pdf
Good luck I think you will like them.

I'm in Canada so distributor is different . And the Quatro were not out yet at least here and they were pricey but! I only need for 4 drawers.
Show us the finished product EH.

Thank you, I'll do that. I'm actually doing the desk with a right hand return, as well as drawers and cabinets for computer gear and supplies in every cavity. Drawing the plans will take longer than the woodwork!!
