Calling on all woodworking experts…
I have an opportunity to purchase a used, but very close to new Delta Unisaw with a 52″ fence system. It is a single phase 3 HP machine. The fella is asking $700.00 which seems like a good price to me, considering they are priced double if not triple that. Any opinions?

Thanks, any more opinions? I have been told Grizzly is the way to go, how is the quality of Delta?
Quality? Get the BMW(Delta) and not the Yugo(Griz). Well maybe not that extreme but I would sure prefer the Delta.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

HA nice. Ok I have a good feeling about. I will most likely buy it.
Thanks
Cross Check,
I'm ditto-ing Forest Girl on the Unifence. By all means get the saw if it's in good shape. The Unifence just makes the deal sweeter!

That's $50 better than I did on mine. If everything's in good shape, go for it! Does it have the Unifence?? I like that fence. Be sure the switch works (inside joke).
Here are the rest of the details:Beaver Delta Unisaw from Canada. Link belts 10 gauge wiring, grade 8 hardware. 52" unifence and extension table. "excellent condition" (I just thought I'd rub it in a little) :)I am really excited to pick it up!!!
You neglected to mention the Beaver part of the equation in your earlier posts.

Don, it is a Unisaw made in Canada. It uses the same parts as the made in USA Unisaw and is in excellent condition.

Ditto on the Beaver.. Similar to if you have a Canadian "Beaumont" you have a "Beaumont". But what you really have is what we refer to down south as a "Shee-velle" or Chevelle. It's a GM Chevelle that is made in Canada by GM and simply has a different name and the grille ornament says Beaumont.
Those GM guys are sharp cookies... aren't they. ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..
Have a good day, DG.

Hi Sarge,
I've never had a chance to see a Beaver Delta in person. I've heard that the sheet metal parts are somewhat different and some rumors that other parts were not identical to the US made Unisaw.
The cabinet on the saw pictured looks a little different but I could'nt put my finger on what it was. The louvers maybe?
The factory where they are made has a very good reputation. I'd sure like a look under the hood! Given the factorys rep. I'm curious as to whether they made any improvements since they had 20 years of Delta experience to build on when they started Canadian production.

I would bet it was the same specs even though I cannot confirm that one way or the other, DG. As long as it's in excellent condition trunnion wise (the Uni-saw's weak link if dropped accidentally by a shipping company in transport) and no vibration... I wouldn't hesitate if I were the OP as the price is very reasonable.

SO, I made the purchase on Sunday. Once we made it home, everything went very well. Got it assembled and running; it looks, sounds and feels GREAT! It was the ride home that wasn't so good, in fact a very bad one. The gentleman took the table saw apart completely, which was fine with me, except for it making it very top heavy. We pushed it to the front of my bed, right snug against the cab of my new 2008 XLT Ranger; and strapped it to the cab with a ratchet strap. Many would think this was enough, well, not so. It tipped over landing 300lbs of steel on the top of the bed rail, leaving a nice impression on the truck, AND breaking the tilt adjustment wheel right in two! It was bad to say the least. Sh$t happens I guess. The saw is great, I am fixing me truck and replacing the wheel with a used one. I can't weld it, I don't think, since it is cast iron.

If you had mentioned you purchased the saw from Jerry (Pac-Man on this forum) I would have told you it was in good condition sight un-seen as Jerry would not sell you something without telling you there was a problem in advance. You got a deal IMO>>>>
Hmmm..... sounds as if you were negotiating those curvy Erie, Pa. roads with a bit too much gusto with that top-heavy chunk of iron in the bed. When I brought my Steel City 5 HP home from the IWF Show in Atlanta it was fully assembled and weighs around 550 lbs. The extension table and full 52" rails were still on it.
But... I drilled and added a large eye hook on each corner of my Dakota and one on each side of the bed in the middle. That is additional to what came on the truck. I loaded it with the left extension facing the cab and placed a large cushion between that extension and the rear cab window. Then 4 nylon aircraft grade straps with heavy duty ratchets got attached. Two were placed in the grooves of the miter slots as I did not want that puppy re-locating on me for the 35 mile trip which in my case is about all express-way.
You might consider adding more hold-downs if you move a lot of machinery as I do. I haul a ton of long lumber also which those two forward floor hooks keep pinned down in the front as the rest hangs over the closed tail-gate with a red flag.
Congratulations and again a very good deal for you as Jerry just didn't need it after acquiring his slider.

I finally found mine for $650. It was two years old and rarley used. It has the 52 inch fence, 3hp and mobile base. My only complaint to date is the milling on the tables is rough compared to my old Jet contractors saw, which was glassy smooth.
Quick, go get it before someone else does. I left at 3:30 am and drove 4 hours to get mine. Beat the next guy by 15 minutes.
Great deal on a great saw. If it's in good shape it'll last about 15 minutes.
Since you're 3000 miles away, I'll join the chorus urging you to grab it and run.
If, OTOH, you were anywhere near me, I would be telling you to run away as fast as possible - after you tell me exactly where it is. I would consider it my duty to get this obviously inferior junker off the market as quickly as possible.
Just taking one for the team, don't you know. - lol
I have a Unisaw and I love it. I bought mine new 3 years or so ago and it was $1800+. Sounds like a heck of a deal to me if the saw is in decent shape. I have the Unifence and love that also. Hurry!!!
Bruce
$700 is a great deal if in excellent condition as the average going price is $800-$850. Check the running gears.. trunnions.. etc. And the Uni-fence would be nice but I certainly wouldn't kick a Biesemeyer out of bed if I needed a good saw at a good price. You can add a false fence face to the Biesemeyer and accomplish the same thing.
Sarge...
The saw is well worth $700 and I hear that the fella selling it is a real stand up guy.

Thanks to everyone! I am new to FineWoodworking.com and I have really enjoyed all the great advice!
So did you get the saw?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I am getting it in the morning. (Sunday) I am pretty excited, I really love the craft and can't wait to get it going...
For that price I would ensure that it is, in fact, a Unisaw rather than the Delta Hybrid and I would check the motor plate to verify it is a 3HP motor. If it checks out, snap it up!
Yeah, I know this makes me sound like I don't trust anyone but I have spent all day talking to intellectual property lawyers and it narrowed my frame of reference! Grrrr....

Ron ,
Do you have some designs in wood er tools ? that you need the legal people for ?
If I knew what you made I forgot , forgive me .
regards dusty
What? That made little sense. Sorry. Elaborate.
Dusty,No, the intellectual property I've been discussing is not as tangible as woodworking designs or tools. I'm working with artificial intelligence software and associated trademarks. We did a little demonstration application of our software and it was picked up by a toy company a few years ago. The little game application is known as 20Q. You can check it out on the web at http://www.20q.net. Thus far, it's been played by somewhere North of 60 million people. In any event, we have trademarks, patents and copyright protection in many countries and the legal work to maintain it is occasionally burdensome. I would much rather be in the shop than talking to lawyers!Regards,Ron
The Delta Unisaw has been (and still is by many) the choice for many years.
You will spend less on a used saw and be helping out the guy selling it.
With three hp, a 52" fence, and a large outfeed table, you don't need much else.
The rest is up to you.
