I generally don't run more than 120 grit on my spindle sander as I'm using it to define curves after cutting them within about an eighth to a sixteenth of an inch of the target line or template on my band saw. I'll use 220 on a hand held sander or by hand to finish the curve and get it nice and smooth for finishing.
