I have a problem with my T/S. I can raise the blade very smoothly but when I lower the blade I have to turn the handwheel a 1/2 a turn to engage it. Now the fun begins, there is a very loud screeching noise when lowering the blade, very tight turning. When it is finally at the right height and I tighten the locking knob the blade will lower some more. I can stop that by turning the hand wheel back a 1/2 turn but why so much play and noise?

Lube rising with what? I have had several suggestions on this. There was an article in FWW on a new lube for the rising and tilting mechanism but I can't find the article or remember the name. Old age setting in.

For exposed gears and threads I use a grease stick I get at hardware stores that is sort of like a soft soap and not nearly as sticky as ordinary grease. I have tried just about everything and nothing works all that well in a sawdust filled environment. In my experience the "dry lubes" don't work for long especially if they are applied to surfaces that still have traces of an older oil or grease. Where shafts go through castings or bushings, ordinary light oil that can wick in around the shaft is the lubricant to use. It is far more important that you use something promptly, even a spray penetrating oil for a quick fix, before the stress of cranking hard breaks or wears out the lift mechanism.John White
Good News. I just got done with the T/S and got all the slop out and cut the noise to a whole lot. But it seems the shaft on the rising mechanism is slightly bent hence the noise. Jet is going to see what they can do about that. I am still waiting to hear from them.
Everyone helped in a big way and I thank all of you for that.

The Tablesaw Tune-up article is in FWW #179 pages 46-53.
