I have a Delta 15″ planer that I bought in 1997. Today the motor burned out on it. I was curious if anyone would know the approximate cost to have the motor replaced? Could it be repaired? Time to buy a whole new machine and sell this one sans motor?
Thanks

If by "burned out" you mean bearings or the centrifugal switch for the start windings need replacing then you (or a capable friend) can do them yourself. If the wires in the windings have shorted out then you need a new motor.
I was given a 2 speed grinder that had 1 of the windings burnt on it. I took it to one of the local motor repair shops and was told it would cost $500.00 or more to rewind. They said that except in the case where there is no replacement that can be obtained, anything under 75 hp is not economical to rewind.
Thanks QC, I really do not know anything about motors. When it went out, it started up fine, then gradually sounded like it was slowing down. After stopping it, white smoke came out of the end with the fan. It had the smell of burnt 'electricals(?)' if that makes sense. I checked the drive belts and they were fine. The motor housing was very hot and took awhile to cool down also.
Oh, OH, you let the magic smoke out of the motor. Motors won't run without it so that's REALLY bad...
Seriously, If you saw smoke and smelled the characteristic smell the windings are probably shot. I agree that rewinding isn't worth the cost.
It's probably not the capacitor since the motor started and ran before it failed. A hot frame could indicate bad windings. Did the circuit breaker trip? Just a feeling from your description, but I think you've got a bad motor.
Good luck.
I checked the capacitor-it looked ok, as did the plastic cooling fan. I did have replace the capacitor about 2 years ago however. The circuit breaker did not trip. I have taken it off and plan to take it to an electric motor repair facility--where I guess they will declare it deceased and issue the death certificate.
Thanks for everyone that responded, your advice is appreciated.
One common issue with that motor is the plastic cooling fan. It can work loose on the shaft, hang up and start burning. It's easy to remove the cover and inspect. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, I'd pull the motor and take it to a repair shop and ask for an estimate. That is a heavy duty motor and should not burn out easily. You can compare the cost of a new one to the repair. I think a new Leeson will go around $320-$400.
I've owned and worked with a lot of planers. The Delta is a sweet planer. You will be hard pressed to find another that is as good, if you want a standard planer.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Call your local motor shop in the yellow pages for an idea. They will have to look to see if it's not something simple but at 2 hp it's often the cutoff point to get a new motor.
