Replacement filter: OLD Craftsman shopva
I have an old (ca. 1983) Craftsman shop vac. The filter is 9″ in diameter and 10″ long. A Google didn’t turn up anything fitting this old beast. Still works fine but the filter is caked up (and has never (!) been replaced). Any sources out there?

Whats the inside dia? Can you post a picture?
Gotta go measure it. And yes, I'll take a photo. I'll get back tomorrow.
thanks
Johnny
You should be able to get new filters from Sears.
Go to http://www.sears.com and find the replacement parts page. Using the part number for the vacuum, it will guide you to the replacement filter. You can either mail order it or go to a local sears.
Thanks Hendo.
Although the number on the filter was not helpful, the model number on the vacuum helped me locate the replacement model online. Hopefully my local Sears has it.
Thanks to all who have reaponded.

You said originally that the filter "was all caked up."Can I assume you have cleaned it?********************************************************

I have the same vintage vacuum (isn't it a tank?! Can't kill mine). You should be able to get a HEPA filter for it, and it really is a great upgrade. A few months ago, one of our members found a source that was much less expensive than the Craftsman-branded filter. I'll see if I can find the thread.
Yup, it sure is a tank. Loud as heck too. Replaced it with a Fein (following some very good reviews) for maaaaaaannnnnyyyy more dollars. Yes the Fien is quiet. When it works. Have had lots of problems with the motor. May need to replace the brushes after relatively little use. Commutator gets all black then refuses to go sometimes. Have cleaned the commutator once and it worked for a few minutes. Last night I opened it up and blue sparks were flying off the commutator on one side. Bummer after all those bucks.
Did a quick look at sears online but they are all smaller. I'll need to get the serial number.
FG you are always a wealth of information!
be well

How long have you had the Fein??? Seems like they would stand behind that product, as expensive as it is; man, I'd be seriously disappointed with that kind of problem!
When I got my HEPA for the ancient Craftsman, I went to Sears on foot, so-to-speak. They had stuff for both the old and the "new".forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Johnny, Sounds like a sticky brush, check to see if the brush that's arcing slides freely in it's holder.
Actually, the Sears HEPA was only $32. Here's the post:
