I am repairing and re-gluing an old mahogany serving cart for a friend. I need to remove the dowels, which are loose enough to make the cart squeaky and annoying but still too tight to simply pull out. Should I cut them off and drill out the remainder, or is there a way to preserve the originals? Thanks to all.

Brillo,
I'd drill them out, then clean up the holes with a bit large enough for the next sized dowel. New glue may cause some swelling of the old dowels making for a better fit, but I'd bet this would only prove to be a temporary fix that will loosen in time. Best to do it right now and not have to do it over.
