I am refinishing an old dinning table, I have stripped it and applied, stained it and used an oil base finish. The problem I am having is, I keep getting fisheye on the table top. I have stripped it back down wipped it clean with laquer thinner(as per finish manufacturer) restained, and the fisheye still came up.can anything be done to stop this. The table is an Oak laminate around, age unknown. any advise???

It sounds like silicone contamination, if it is or isn't apply a coat of shellac, scuff sand when dry & apply your finish.

do you mean that I need to strip it back down, restain then apply the shellac? Thanks jwebber
Put a coat of shellac on what you have (if it looks all right) and then put some wipe on varnish coats.Gretchen
As said apply shellac,if you want add a glaze (gel varnish works fine) in the color of you choice. When this has dried completely another coat of shellac to seal and the top coat of you choice. I prefer alkd or phenolic varnish.ExperimentREgards

Jerry,
If it's of any help, Woodworker's Supply sells a "fFisheye Flowout" Their product # 848-803. I just thought you may be interested.
Many places sell it. It is silicone based and I for one would never use it. I did once, but never again.Regards
