I’ve been turning pens for several years now and am loving it. Until now I’ve been getting my kits from Penn State Industries. As I use their kits more, the pen refills themselves seem to not work very well. They tend to stop writing on paper that has any oil on it at all. I was wondering what kits others might recommend. Also, are different manufacturers different as far as their bushing sizes, etc.?

I have NEVER been impressed with the quality of the ballpoint pen cartridges in the pen kits. For the most part they are cheap and don't last. I have a pen kit from Woodcraft and the ballpoint cartridge only lasted 3 Sunday crosswords before it stopped writing. Some of the pen kits are so cheap it would almost be worth it to go buy name brand replacement cartridges like Cross and toss the one that comes with the kit. I know if I spent $20 on a pen I would be rather upset if the cartridge went dry in 3 weeks. But that is my $.02 worth.
