I recently acquired a Record 778 Rabbet Plane in new condition. After honing the iron I tried it out on a piece of walnut. The plane works great but there is a shrill, high pitch noise coming from it. Can anyone offer advice as to why and what can be done to eliminate this noise. Any help would be appreciated.

I think I've got the same plane. The blue one with the fence? I've never had it make that noise.
Could it be the "nicker" on the side? It is used to score the wood ahead of the cutter when making cross grain cuts.
Back before I had a router and a tablesaw, I used that plane to "raise" box lids.
Worked very nice.
Chills,
Yes, that's the same plane but I did not have the nicker turned down at the time.
I was just checking to see how it would work after honing the iron. Raised panels
is one of the things I hope to use this for also. I agree, it is a nice plane.

rub a candle stub onto the running parts of the plane, Rick,
it may just be friction.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try it.
