A couple of years ago I bought a Primus #4 by ECE. It seemed like a good deal from the tests done in a WW mag. The mouth opening is adjustable but when I adust the blade to start planing it comes right up to the sliding part. I got no instructions with it and I think the blade goes bevel down. I know I am not too happy with it. It is too light but then again I have never used a finish plane before. Where can I get directions on its use and how all of the parts go together? I do not figure things out well just by looking at them and need some clear direction.

Jerry,
The blade goes bevel down.
Is it a plane with the wooden wedge that is adjusted with gentle mallet taps, or does it have an adjuster - I think that the Primus/ECE planes have an adjuster that looks like a wedding ring on the end of a bolt.
If you let us know this bit, then I'm sure you'll get the advice you're looking for.

It has an adjuster. It seems as though the blade is sitting too far forward as if it had a spacer between it and the frog. I do not recall it have such little clearence when I first got it. Maybe I'll strip it down and put it back together to see if I screwed up when I had the blade out last. It is a Hock blade and I'm sure it is the same thickness as the original. But then again I have no idea where the other blade is.
