I am set to buy a 10″ contractors saw, and I am just wondering what percentage would be reasonable to pay for a used saw in excellent shape (versus buying new). In other words, if I am looking at a new package (let’s say, Delta with 30″ Bies, sliding miter table–the current offer, for example) that costs $850, what would be a reasonable price to pay for a used setup of the exact same configuration in “excellent” condition?
I’d like to hear from others who have bought used power tools. I know the trade off is warrantee for the most part, especially if I run some boards and check the top, motor and fence. But, how much of a percentage off the new price is a reasonable deal?
Thanks,
Purds

That would depend on the age of the tool but 1/2 to 2/3,s for top notch name brand stuff. Tablesaw, jointers, planers run a premium versus lathes etc. Looking at it from the other way, a Delta contractor saw that was bought 10 years ago with a Biesemeyer fence and in mint condition can sell at more than the original price which fits into the above formula. So if you don't mind a possible long wait you are better buying the saw new. When you get into used industrial 3 phase stuff that's where you can save big. I bought an Oliver 16" jointer for $1750 and put $400 of rework and my time in it and a new one at the time would have been over $11,000.
Real world time here,
I've been trying to sell my 4 year old Delta contractor saw for 6 months at $300.00 without a nibble. I went around and changed the price on it to $200 a month ago and still don't have a nibble. What do you want to pay for it? I hate the damn thing!
