Gary,
A customer who liked my dining table wants me to build 4 chairs to go with it. We’ve decided upon the Arts and Crafts Stickley design as detailed in Rex Alexander’s FWW article, “Building a chair, Arts and Crafts style” What would be a fair price for 4 of these chairs? Also, why not use loose tenons?
Thanks,
Tom

This is a tough question to answer as pricing one's work depends on lots of factors. I remember when I wrote my first article for FWW on my stool design and someone wrote me and said, gee that was great, I'm making ten of these a week. All I could think about was why didn't he send me a dime each time he built one.
So if you're going to use someone else's design, I would think you would need to price these based upon your own experience, the needs of your shop's budget, and your market. What you may be able to build in 15 hours might take someone else 20 hours. There's also no way for me to predict how you might streamline the building process or how your shop is or is not able to produce work efficiently. Too many variables to consider. If I said $300/ chair you might scoff and say it can't be done because you want to make $30/ hour. If I said $3000/ chair, you might say that you'd be pricing yourself out of work.
I based my prices on my work experience. If you have none, then price the work fairly as any beginner in an industry should.
Thank, good advice.
Tom
