Hey All,
I will soon be building kitchen cabinets for my kitchen. Sorta like the ones Norm did and I like the idea of prefinished plywood for the inside of the cabs. I have never used it and had a few questions:
I am painting the cabinets, can I get the plywood with only one side finished? If not do I paint over the finish? I woudl hate to have to do that!
I think I would use Birch?
Where can I get this in Eastern MA? I can drive a reasonable distance to pick it up.
Anyone use it? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Anyone know the cost?
Anyone ever use the prefinished Drawer Sides he used?
Thanks
Dana

I would definately use the pre-finished plywood. It's not so much more expensive that even painting over some of it shouldn't be too painful--mostly making the priming job easier after scuffing the pre-finish. I seem to remember $65 or $75 for pre-finished 3/4" maple that I bought last year (in shoreline CT). I wouldn't trust the stuff I've seen at the Borg.
I'd bet it's fairly readily available near you. Go to http://www.woodfinder.com to make a localized search of distributors near you.
Thanks Steve, I never thought of using Woodfinder for plywood. It says Highland HArdwoods in NH has them and I go there once i while so I will giv ethem a call today.
Thanks.
I get 1/2" (12mm) "Baltic" Birch in 5' x 5' unfinished sheets for ~$40 each. On my last project, I tried the pre-finished stuff for the drawer boxes and am totally sold on it.
I get the prefinished 5' x 5' sheets for ~$44 each with unfinished edges. I can also get "strips" 12" wide x 5' long (or 18" wide x 5' long) that have the long edges rounded and finished.
It takes a bit of planning, but you can make all of your drawer boxes so the raw edges are buried. The payoff (for me) was on finishing day when I didn't have to spray the boxes.
If I were making painted drawer boxes, I think that I would use the unfinished 5' x 5' sheets and pre-prime them before I made the boxes.

Thanks, I have my guy at the lumber yard getting me prices from Atlantic Plywood. I am figuring in the 70s range per sheet. The drawer stock only comes in 10 peice bundles so that may be more than what I need.
