I remember them too - Wellsaw electric handsaw.
Dear Clement,
Oh yeah, they existed. We used to use them as demo saws in the 80's. They had a much further reach then a "Sawzall" and the ridgid blade was nice for cutting in door and window openings. Not a terribly great tool, but yes, they did exist.
Best,
John
Thanks John,
THE REASON FOR THIS QUERY IS, i have a need to slice up some 1 IN. BOARDES FROM A 4 BY 10 PEICE OF RED OAK. I will be cutting across the 4 In. side. This peice is about 8 Ft. long, and weighs a ton, more or less. I thought that if I could just get it off the floor on some horces, that i could cut some slabs from it, so you see, I am looking for something easier than a hand saw.
Clement
Dear Clement,
I'm not clear if you are trying to make 10" wide slabs or 4". If 4", I would suggest a circular saw. A 7 1/4" will require two passes. A 10" will cut to about 3 3/4". If you need deeper, I would suggest a "Prazi" beam cutter. They look a little freaky, but they would seem to fit the bill. I have never used one, but I would be open to trying one.http://www.amazon.com/Prazi-USA-PR7000-Cutter-4-Inch/dp/B0000224SA/ref=pd_sim_hi_shvl_title_2/102-4037489-2548950?ie=UTF8&qid=1191010614&sr=8-2Best,John
Thanks John,
I will try my 7&1/4 circle saw, if I can get the lumber up on some horces where I can get to it. Thanks for the advice.
Clement
Thanks for the link. Did you notice the size of the riving knive on that thing?

Clement ,
I remember first seeing this electric hand saw when the mobile farm butcher would come out and butcher our hogs . He hung the hog and literally cut it right down the middle . He had a truck mounted generator and water and the whole shooting match .
I thought it was a special tool designed for the meat cutting industry , had never seen one before the late 70s , didn't know they were for wood ?
A low mounted band saw with out feed support may be better safer and easier for you to get the leverage you need ,you move the wood not yourself as much as with a hand held saw .
