I was birdwatching in my backyard today and noticed a red oak in my neighbor’s yard had recently toppled over. I went over to investigate and the base of the trunk had gotten infested with termites. Nevertheless, most of the trunk for about 10 ft. is intact and about 13 inches in diameter. Not a big tree but nevertheless worth milling. I asked my neighbor if I could have it and he agreed.
So I started to survey my own property and I have a great white oak, around 26 inches in diameter at shoulder height and clear of branches for about 30 feet. It would be easy to cut down as it isn’t near the house and slightly lists toward a clearing that is accessible from my backyard.
I was thinking that, if I were to ask someone to come out to mill the small red oak, we could cut down the white oak and mill that too. I live in the Richmond, VA area but have just recently moved here and don’t know anybody who is available to do this sort of thing. The yellow pages were no help. I was thinking of getting a Granberg Mill and chainsaw but that would be rather pricey and it’s a lot of work to fight your way through oak with a chainsaw.
Please advise.

Phone Woodmiser. They maintain a list of people who own their equipment who may be interested in the job.
Competitors of Woodmiser may do the same.
what Cincinnati said, except I think its Woodmizer with a Z do a google
My brother in law just bought a mill. I’m sure he would be willing to break in on you lumber if you were willing to drive the log to Battle Creek, MI. If that does not work for you try http://www.forestryforum.com/
That's out of the question. I don't have a truck, or even the means to load a truck with heavy logs. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
I was actually joking, I figured theat a drive from Virginia to Michigan would be a bit out of range. I guess I should listen to my wife when she tells me I'm not as funny as I think I am. You might also have some luck calling woodworking stores. I've seen them posted on bulletin boards at a store near me.
Try woodweb.com.

You're welcome.

There are a number of Woodmizer & other sawmill owners around the Fredericksburg area. I'm sure there are some closer to Richmond. The problem that you're going to have is that you don't have enough logs to make moving & setting up a mill worthwhile for most of the people that do it. You might find somebody willing to do it for an outrageous price per board foot, but then you're just better off going & buying the wood you need.
I have the means to load & haul logs I come across, but even then, there are times that what I've paid the mill operator to saw a marginal log would have better better spent elsewhere.
