planers – delta 12.5 vs Dewalt 12.5?
Anybody used both the Delta 22-560 12.5″ planer and Dewalt DW733 12.5″ planer? I’ve found reviews and comments on the Dewalt and the bigger (13″ 22-580) Delta but am thinking of one of the 12.5’s versus the other. At the current street prices, Delta’s 22-560 is closer to the Dewalt in price.

Hi Steve; I have a Delta 22-560 12.5" Planner and use a Dewalt DW733 12.5" at the toy workshop I go to each week. Both are very nice. I think the Dewalt has a few more features such as a built in thickness guage that you read as you insert you wood. Both have very little snipe if you lock them down on your final pass. The Dewalt make more noise in operation. I think you will be happy with either. You might also consider the new Home Depo model planner. We have the Home Depo and the 13" Delta at the school I go to for smaller work pieces. They also work very nice. Enjoy, Roger.
Steve,
I have the Delta 12.5 and it works fairly well. It is my first planer so I have nothing to compare it against. I did have to have it serviced..the belt was tearing up, burning a hole in the plastic cover....minor repair but the guy said the tension needs to be correct or else.
I would look at the 13"..appears to be much more substantial. I often gang boards together with a couple of C-clamps and run them through the planer ..before joining. I think the 13" allows larger than 6" boards to be put through this way..
Hi Steve, I have the 22-560 and also had to replace a belt about 3 months after purchase but have had no problems for the last 3 years. Serves my shop well.
I like DeWalt products (I have router and trimsaw). I think price may be your biggest concern. Brian
