These two pics show a small pine table I made for someone who wanted an old looking painted finish.I’m not sure it didn’t look better before distressing what does everyone think and does anyone have any disstessing techniques/recipies?
Thanks Gavin

Gavin ,
A very cute little table .
The real question is whether the person you made it for likes it .
The distressed look is so different then the natural look , shabby sheik is so in now .
I learned to age and distress with the use of a chain to beat dents into the surfaces and we used a thin ice pick to create worm holes and such , you could always tie it to you bumper and take it for a drive .

Nice idea about the towing trick Dusty but I think that maybe a bit extreme, seriously though,I like the idea about the ice pick worm holes, guess a fine awl would work as well

Gavin ,
Does looking distressed mean to also look old ? It is really two different things .
The worm hole story was only to emulate old , in reproduction works .
Western Pine gets Beetle but may not actually get worms .
They say the Pine turns Blue when it is down , around these parts where they made it it was called Blue Wormy Pine . It was sold in 1X6 T & G by the units for cheap back in the 70s , they burned and threw out anything shorter then 8' and Blue was considered trash .
I made about 20 kitchens worth of it .I think we paid $250 for a 2,000 LF unit .

nice piece, Norm just did a small table on New Yankee workshop that had a distressed finish you might watch that episode.
Troy
Thanks Troy I will keep an eye out for that one, but I think we are probably way behind you over here, they seem to keep repeating the same 10 or 12 norm shows on our cable

I can't always tell how old the Norm shows are here as well as the PBS seem to be on a pledge break every other week. He also did the same distressed look on a Windsor chair a while back. Good luckTroy
Thanks troy I think I have seen the windsor chair as I remember it was using paint stripper?

I had forgotten about the shop-smith episodes:) very good Troy
Was that a table or the bed he "painted" black?:-)
(actually I like Norm.)John
the table:) although he did a mahogany bed that after he stained, glazed and polyed it it almost looked black:) I like Norm as well despite the occasional odd choice of finish for Cherry and Walnut.Troy
I like em both. Nice work, Kudos
The customer is always right!! Grin!
Recently on the DIY Channel show "Blog Cabin" they had a bench they wanted distressed and the host, Amy, was hitting it with keys and such. On of the local contractors on the show said that was not the way to distress the thing and took it into the gravel in the driveway, flipped it upside down, and slammed in into the gravel. Then he slid it back and forth in the gravel a few times and said that was how to distress. That is not distressing in my book, it is abuse!
Years ago I worked for Lane Furniture in Virginia and they distressed with chains that had bolts and nuts welded to them. They also used a spray gun with a black lacquer that sputted and spit what they though looked like fly speck all over the piece. Of course that was after sanding it to a slick gleam! What a waste of fine wood.

The perfect distress work is done by Grandchildren, I've got proof of that !!!!!!!! ;-) Like it or not.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Actually, kids work as well as grandchildren. We have a two year old and four year old. The labrador helps things along too.
I have been considering going into the furniture distressing business. Customers could just drop off new furniture at our house and, with no effort on my part, it would be fully distressed in about six weeks.
Yep five kids, I ask the wifey if I can make us a new table and she says "what are you crazy why waste all that good wood!"
shes right but I would still like a new table! maybe when they get a little older? For right now the only thing they are distressing is ME! HA HA
ChaimMake your own mistakes not someone elses, this is a good way to be original !
You've got that right!! My two grandsons have done their share of distressing, one even distressed the new living room carpet with an upside down plate of spagetti and meatballs that he was told not to take into the living room! He has grown up now and in December he gave us a great gift. Her name is Andrea Jean, she's my first great grandchild, and she is a doll.
PS She is one day old in the photo!

This Grandpa has a Son and three grandchildren living him, but hopefully the new girl friend will change all that. Not that I don't love them all, but it's time to carry on with my retirement.
Very cute baby, It's nice when they visit ;-)Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

The best part about being a grandfather or great grandfather is that you can spoil the kid rotten and then hand them back to Momma!! :>)

Bruce,
we don't get that show on cable this side of the pond but I used to work with an antique restorer who kept a box of old nuts/ bolts/screws, and when he put a new top on an old dresser he would carefully polish the top then dump the contents of the box on it, restrip the whole piece and then repolish it, he reckoned it was the only way to get the right look!
