Anyone have experience repairing a leak in the oil seal around the cutterhead where it enters the gearbox? I assume the oil seal needs to be replaced I’m not concerned about taking the machine apart but are there any crucial alignment issues when putting it back together?
Also, checking online it seems that a suitable replacement for the gear oil is Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. Anyone have any comment on this? You can’t buy it from Delta (“out of stock”) and it is priced outrageously.

Anything from a manufacturer is going to be overpriced, including seals which can be gotten from a power transmission place or industrial supplier. Will definitely be a metric size. Just take it apart and do it. It's pretty basic. A lot easier than an engine. The oil will be fine. You are paying a lot more for synthetic and it's not really necessary in this application.
I can not help you on the leak, but when I contacted Delta to buy some oil for the gear box on my 380 planer the technician I talked to recommend an oil I could buy locally, at a much cheaper price. I have used it for the last 12 years with no problems.
Duane,
I had a similar leak with my unit and the manual recommended replacing the seal. I merely tightened things with the Allen head screws on the gear box cover. The leak stopped. That was about three years ago and the machine is working fine.
What was the cheaper oil?
