I currently reside in a small town in southern New Jersey, called Oaklyn. Which is located within Camden County. I have worked in this area for almost 10 years and built up a small handyman business, with repeat customers annually. I am relocating to Linwood, New Jersey which is a small shore town located in Atlantic County. In the upcoming year, 2004′, I assume that I will be working in 3 different NJ counties. My main question is do I need to obtain a business license from the town where my permanent residence is (Linwood)? The county of my permanent residence (Atlantic County)? A general business license from the state of NJ, that covers all counties w/in NJ? Or do I need to obtain a license from all three counties which I intend to work in, during 2004′? I will be sub-contracting new home warranty work from K. Hovnanian Co. in Deptford, NJ (Gloucester County) this upcoming January 2004′. I was wondering if where I need to obtain a business license from? Is it even neccessary to obtain a business license if the work is just repairs and not capital home improvements? I am really stumped on this one! State vs. County vs. Township Law requirements for a business license?????????????? HELP HELP cHIPPER 12/27/2003

Well, I lived in California, and I believe it's pretty much the same in every state(I did say I believe) So, you will probably need a license for each county if the area is not incorporated(incorporated out here means a city). You will also need a license a license for each city you work in too. In Calif, the contarctors license covers you for the entire state, but the business licenses don't.
Hope this helps
Bummer, huh?
Chipper... First, check with Hovnanian. See if you are covered under THEIR license/permit. If memory serves me correctly, they are a large company and have their own 'legal department'. They (legal) can best answer your questions since they are building in several counties. Out here on Long Island, several towns require their own permits even though you have a county permit. There are too many different rules to make a general statement. Best to check in the three counties. They will know which townships require separate permits.

Hi chipper ,
You said that you would be "sub contracting" for this company in 2004. If they are the only one you work for during 2004 ,things may be different. You may be considered an employee. Here in Oregon our state lic along with a city lic from the town you are centered in is all we need to have in most cases. Think about the many out of town workers of all types that are in and out of any given town. I will bet they all don't have city or county lic . I suppose technically we need to be lic in each county or city , but I don't think that is the type of things people get in trouble for. Check with your tax preparer and the outfit you will sub for, they will have the facts.
good luck
