Some years ago I made some thumb planes from castings I got from St James Bay, good casting. The mouth got to big and the thing was to small for my hand i wanted one a little bigger.
So I made a pattern and cast some scrap bronze and machined all the parts, the blade is A-2. I will not be making them for sale.
It’s just a hobby making the tools I use in my woodworking.

Gorgeous!
Wow, that's beautiful, John!! Don't know what else to say, except i wish I could reach into the pics and touch. Really sweet.
Yes, nice job, John.
You should be relieved that they are not for sale. You would not be able to keep up with the orders! I would want one for sure.
Beautiful!!!
Very nice!
thanks
Thanks for looking over my work. the photo are planes I'm making, I need to get back to woodworking and use the tool I make.
I missed these. Excellent work - nice tidy little planes.
How did you come up with the lever cap screw? It's very nice.
I know nothing of the casting process other than what I've seen online in blog posts and youtube videos, but it certainly looks interesting to say the least, especially given that you cast the top and dovetailed it to the sole instead of casting the entire body.
The cap screw
I make them. I have an old 9" south bend lathe. I also made the knurling tool and the 3/8"-10 acme tap
JOhn,
What does one do with a thumb plane?
Thanks,
Mel
thumb plane usage
I believe they are used mostly by safe crackers to remove de-sensitizing skin from the thumb and first two fingers. ;-)
Ralph,
Are you just another name for Charles Stanford? Ha ha ha ha ha.
Naw. He wasn't as funny as you.

driving me nuts
I keep bouncing back and forth between #2 & #3 photos and can't figure how the front two dove tails are made !! I have no problem seeing how the two rear dove tails were made.
Anybody else see the answer.??
i believe they are peened. The brass is tapped with a hammer until it fills the 'double" dovetail.
Peened ;-)
That makes sence, No way could you slide it together backwards.
Sure would drive somebody nuts if you could pull that trick off with lumber.
peened
yes I peen them.
John
