Searched high/low and found some really nice clear vertical grain Doug fir. Will have to wait for it to dry but it should make a very nice NFWB. <!—-><!—->
Came from a big old 60″ diam 400 year old tree off BLM land in <!—-><!—-> <!—->Oregon <!—-><!—->. The tree was destined for fire wood after it broke off in a winter storm. Thanks to that sawyer who was good enough to purchase and create beautiful quarter sawn DF. <!—-> <!—->

That looks very, very nice. It's amazing how much high-quality wood gets cut up into 18" lengths and burned.
If you need anyone to take some off your hands....

Prying it from My Cold, Dead Hands is the only way it’s going to leave my shop. It’s really hard to find good old growth DF. Unless you live out west and have a saw mill.
I cleaned up one of the faces on a board... I love DF. it smells so good.
20-30 rings per inch.
wow I'm such a wood geek!
Wonderful wood I am green with wood envy. I salvaged some wood like that from old framing lumber and it is great stuff. Around the bay area wood like that costs more that most hardwood. Have fun

If you guys want I can contact the sawyer. I think he has some material from the same tree still waiting for a good home.<!----><!----><!---->
I know it was a pain for him to ship it me but I did buy 150 b/f from him.<!----><!---->
If your interested I can hook you up with him, located in OR. Provided he wants to sell more?<!----><!---->

I'd be interested, although the shipping cost might make it prohibitive. You can send me an email with his contact info by clicking on my username.

"I have more CVG Fir that's for sale, 2 x 3, 2 x 4, a few 2 x 5 and of course 2 x 6's. And if someone wants something special cut, I've got two 70" x 8' logs in my yard that are looking for special orders but they would be green. They're not as nice as what you got but they will meet specs."<!----><!---->
He was a very reasonable guy to deal with. I would do business with him again.<!----><!---->

Thanks. The email has been sent. ;-)

Thanks for your kind offer. I have to be careful about buying wood with out a project to build with it (the fuel load in my shop is a bit high right now:))Troy
sleepydad ,
That's definitely the kind , I just made a mantle out of some old growth CVG Fir that I have had hoarded away in my wood closet , still have more .
Just for kicks I called on a price ,for 2" X 6 " they said $5.30 per bf and the vg is 8 - 10 rings per inch , a different animal for sure . Not much old growth gets cut locally anymore .

DF does smell good. One of my bench tops is DF, near 20yrs old. Being my goto bench it takes a beating, cleaned it up recently and the aroma is still there after breaking through the layers of sealer. Nice - just nice. good to smell the old bench again, LOL

old growth DF is beautiful wood, it's such a treat walking into 100'ish year old homes and seeing paneling and doors from trees that are almost impossible to get these days... it's hard to imagine that big box framing lumber comes from essentially the same species of tree.
Wow....... That is beyond nice. Great to have a bench where you can see and use it for years to come.
Enjoy it for all of us.
