I was thinking about making a couple peppermills on my lathe. I’ve decided it best to purchase a chuck to hold the round 2 ½” stock. Does anybody have any recommendations? It seems for the mini-lathe (mine is a Jet – 1×8 TPI) that a few stick out – Oneway Talon Chuck, Nova Compac Chuck, 3″ Axminster, and the 3 1/2″ Vicmarc. Here is my initial assesment of each:
Nova Compac – does not come standard with jaws large enough to grip 2 ½”, but with an adapter you can use some of the standard Nova jaws.
Oneway Talon – would work out of the box, but the jaws are serrated. Limited extra jaw sets offered.
Vicmarc 3 ½” – comes with 2” jaws (smooth grip) and has many additional jaw sets available.
3″ Axminster – like the Vicmarc comes with 2” jaw set and has many additional jaw sets available.

logsend, How about a shop turned oak or maple mandrel(#1) turned with a round tenon to fit your existing chuck?
The opposite end of the#1 turning should be bored to a 'Slip' fit to the outside diameter of the mill. Another aid would be a shouldered wood 'plug' turned to fit the mill's inside diameter and center drilled on the fatter opposite end (Keep this Short)
To cut the thread, insert #1 in lathe chuck, insert mill bottom end into #1's bore, insert #2 in mill bore, close up the 'live' center (Waxed) to press all to a fairly tight fit and apply threads Stein. NOTE: The pressure should be all directed to the bottom of the mill,(Not the threaded end.)
