Its primarily casein and lime. If you simply google milk paint you'll find a variety of variations on the theme. Some have different additives than others, but all essentially the basic idea.
In a nutshell, vinegar curdles skim milk, curds are separated from whey and mixed with a very finely ground version of hydrated lime (as in, not quicklime, and not horse stall or agricultural lime), dry pigments, water, voila.
If you're doing it because it sounds fun, more power to ya. I'd love to hear more about it. If you just want milk paint, the Old Fashioned Milk Paint company is a much simpler and cheaper route, if your time is worth anything.

"...the Old Fashioned Milk Paint company is a much simpler and cheaper route, if your time is worth anything." Also very good quality.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
December 1991, Issue 91, page 63 is the one I think your looking for.
Not quite 25 years ago but closer to than from.
It is much easier to buy it from http://www.milkpaint.com than to try and make it yourself. Like FG said these people are excellent in every way I have dealt with them- customer service, on orders, questions, etc.
They also have excellent literature packaged with their product and their website is great. If you are wanting milkpaint these are the people to deal with.
Someone on here turned me on to them and I have had excellent success with their product.
Also there is an excellent article on one of the ways to use milkpaint by Mike Dunbar. It can be accessed at the milkpaint.com>gallery>Mike Dunar> click the link.

Good post, Webby, I didn't take the time to make a link. I just can't see messin' around with making milkpaint when OFMPC has done all the research and testing and found the perfect mix!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thanks, I agree totally. The people at old fashioned milk paint are great.
Milkpaint isn't cheap but it would cost me ten times as much to make it myself if I even could.
