Has anyone used the new Dewalt DW618 as a plunge router? I am looking for a mid size router to be used primarily as a hand held plunge router. I currently own a PC 690, for handheld work, but am not happy with the plunge action. Is a dedicated plunge router better than the combo machines? I would appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks in advance, Bill

A good one.
What is it about the PC plunge router that you don't like? Is it the combo version?
I have one, and like it a lot.
I also have a dedicated plunge router (Bosch), which I find more cumbersome than the plunge mechanisms that are part of a combo package. Also, I can't see any performance advantages.
My take on routers is that they are all pretty much the same -- as far as performance is concerned. I think you are safe to select a given router based on the features you like.
I have a lot of routers (too many probably) -- mostly PC, but a number of Bosch's. However, if the Dewalt had some feature that I thought was terrific, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. But as you have done, I would put it up to this knowledgeable group first, since as you know, these forums are very helpful in warning you away from machines that are problematic for one reason or another.
The PC I have is the 690 which has the interchangeable bases. I have 2 main complaints about the plunge base.
(1) It is a pain to change the router motor to the plunge since it requires an allen wrench to secure it. The placement of the allen nut is such that it is awkward to tighten.
(2) The plunge action is not very smooth and appears to bind at times.
So, that is why I am in the market for a router to use for hand held work (in addition to just looking for a reason to buy another router).
re: the allen wrench thing
That's the very point I was trying to make about features. This doesn't bother me, but I don't change out the bases that frequently), but I am completely sympathetic that it might be an irritant for you.
On the plunging action, I assume you have tried cleaning off the posts and lubricating them. If you have done that, and they still don't work right, I would call the 800 service center number in TN, and ask the tech if there is some sort of adjust you might make.
I too look for "reasons" to buy another router. My goal is to reach my cabinet making friend on the router race track -- he has about 25 routers, and gloats that he hardly ever has to change a bit. I have a long way to go ............
You might want to take a look at the new PC plunge router (in the 890 series). Rumor has it they made some improvements to address gripes about the 690 series.
