That's a pretty tall order, there's a significant difference in grain and density of the woods. A 'wash coat' of shellac will prevent too rapid absorption of the stain, and a couple of the Minwax "Oak" stains have enough red in them to make a fair color match. I believe I used 'Colonial Oak' or 'Country Oak' and had reasonable results. Experiment a lot, If you find a perfect match, let me know :-) I'm starting another remodel job too.
Why not just buy some old heart pine? There's plenty of place selling the stuff. It's a matter of experimnting with finishes if you go with the new stuff.
You're the one looking at it so you'll have to do the judging. But heart pine tends usually to have an orangy tone to it. I'd experiment with some orange (yellow & red) dye in some shellac, to use as a glaze. Then go over with your final finish.
The reason I need to match heart pine is because I pulled up linoleum in a kitchen and the wood flooring underneath doesn't match the rest of the house. The homeowners don't have the money to buy old heart pine. They understand that it won't match perfectly, we are just trying to get close. I appreciate all your help. Thanks
