I need to make some red oak stair treads match the white oak in the rest of a house. Any ideas on the best way to achieve this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Matt

Matt,
These are two completly different woods in grain structure. I know, I'm not telling anything you don't already know.
The red oak has a pinkish cast to it along with that wide sweeping grain. In other words, they aren't going to match.
Is the white oak stained at all or is it natural? If it's colored you may be able to bring the red oak in a little.
You could consider bleaching the stair treads to knock the pink out of it. It's just not a sure thing.
Without trying to sound like a smart a$$, how about a wide runner going down the stairs?

thanks for the reply Peter. the white oak is a laminate with a "clear coat" they purchased but didn't like the movement of the stuff on the stairs. He purchased and cut to fit the red oak stair treads in question prior to trying to match the finish. He is already planning to bleach the underside of one but there may be some cheap treads for sale on craigslist soon:) thanks again.
