Hi, I have designed a rocker that I would like to build. It would be a sculpted type rocker, the kind that Sam Maloof builds. It is very different from his but it would use similiar construction techniques. I have not been able to find any information that would help to instruct me on how to make this chair. I would appreciate any help in directing me to a source of instruction. Thanks for your help. Pete

First thing I'd do is buy the Sam Maloof video from Taunton Press. In it Sam shows lots of the steps he uses to build his rockers.
The rear legs have a 5 degree offset and he designed special router bits to make this easy. Highland Hardware in Atlanta carries these bits, as well as a 1/4 inch rabbeting bit with a 1/2 inch bearing (you'll need the two 5 degree bits plus the rabbeting bit).

Thanks John, I have sent for tht video. Pete
Pete,
If you've got access to some old FWW mags, check this one out. September/October 1983 #42 . On page 52 Sam himself has an article called, How I Make a Rocker. Great story. There are probably some copies of this issue for sale in the mags for sale section of Knots. I got mine on Ebay.

Thanks Steve, I have emailed one of the magazine sellers. Pete
Pete,
Thats a pretty good old issue but, if you can't find it or don't want to buy it, I could probably copy it off for you. Good luck!

Contact Hal Taylor (haltaylor.com) for a similar chair. He sells the design complete with patterns and construction manual.
Good luck,
Richard
Hi Richard, Thanks for the info. I have heard of him and have checked out his web site. The problem is that I don't want to make the Maloof rocker and I can't afford the cost for the directions. Thanks, Pete
