I am thinking about making a bowl lathe. Has anyone seen plans for one that would turn 16″ to 20″ dia. bowls? I have thought of purchasing a drive unit from a retired shopsmith and converting it. Or I have access to a 1-1/2 hp, variable speed, single phase, motor from an old printing press to use. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks

Taunton reprinted a collection of articles from FWW in a book called "Making and Modifying Woodworking Machinery". In it are three articles on making lathes and one of those being a bowl lathe.
There are plans for a bowl lathe in the "shopbuiltools" yahoo group in the files section. I am not certain it has the capacity you require but maybe could be adapted to your needs. I noticed that it was designed to be very stout which is sometimes a weak point of DIY machines I have experience with. Good luck with your project.
