Does anyone know how I can obtain a nice slab at a reasonable price (quit laughing!) to make a dining room table. I live in the Phoenix area, so I’m guessing this will involve freight charges. At this point I have no wood preference. Thanks, Rob.

RK,
You might try contacting a local woodworking club/association. They could probably put you in touch with someone in your area.
what kind of wood did you have in mind? You can get big slabs of walnut and redwood in California. There are quite a few websites with wood on the west coast. Good luck
Troy
There are tons of companies that have large slabs. A couple on the West Coast:
Tropical Latin American Hardwoods: http://www.anexotichardwood.com/
Gilmer Wood (Expensive, but really top of the line stuff): http://www.gilmerwood.com
Ones on the East Coast:
Talarico Hardwoods: http://www.talaricohardwoods.com/ (these guys specialize in large slabs)
And very inexpensive - Steve Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC (ask about walnut slabs - he had a bunch the last time I was there):

Talarico used to be the go-to company and somebody has already mentioned them. They definitely should be the first call you make.

One to consider if you want walnut.
Woodworkers scource on Elliot rd. in Tempe has some really nice large slabs of 4/4 and 8/4 figured bubinga right now. but not cheap! The Tucson store has some fairly large pieces of Palo Maria(cheaper). The Phoenix store may have some also. Chris

Thanks, I go check it out; I live in Scottsdale.
I decided to post again to show off my slab of figured bubinga, it's 4/4 28X96.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and website url's. Very helpful!
