I need a finishing problem solved or advice!! I recently completed a project from ash wood, and finished it with OPEX M-60 Black lacquer (Sherwin-Williams). It looks great except that it chips easily and thus you can see the wood (which is quite light). What kind of overcoat could I use to make the finish more durable? Precat lacquer or something else or I’m just stuck with that finish? Any help would be really appreciated.

Sounds like you may have an adhesion problem. What did you use for a primer? Ash isn't a particularly smooth wood, any reason you chose that for a paint surface?
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I wanted the grain of ash and I also liked the matte finish of OPEX M-60 Black lacquer.

Lacquer is a hard, inflexible finish (unless formulated with elasticizers) so it will tend to crack, craze and/or chip when dinged. An advantage of varnish or poly varnish is that it is softer and more flexible. Therefore, when dinged, it "gives" rather than fails. Oil based finishes are much tougher than hard finishes like lacquer and shellac.
That said, what did you do to prepare the surface for finishing?
After talking to the Sherwin-Williams rep and another fellow who deals with tese type of finishes told me!
Sherwin Williams has a complete system of compatible products , the store you bought the material should have the info for your particular application .
That said , whenever we would do a Black lacquer type finish the base coat or primer if used was always tinted to a dark color to avoid see through problems. We always top coated with clear in the desired gloss after the Black .
The chipping could be because there is no top coats ?

I think I will use a precat lacquer as a top coat.
You might want to try CAB Acrylic instead. Check on S-W website, but I think they do not recommend putting a catalyzed finish over a non- catalyzed finish. Unless your black lacquer was catalyzed, I would check their professional side on the website and click wood finishing products, then click the pds. If I want to use a sealer under my Sherwood precat they say I have to catalyze it first. Of course the catalyst for the vinyl sealer is not the same as for the precat lacquer. The company recommends using the precat as a self sealer. I would call your chemical coatings store in your state. I know there are two in Michigan, but I am not sure where you live. It might be OK, but check first, or use CAB Acrylic. It is water white so no tone change will occur, but over black that might be a mute point.Terry
