I am building a book case and will make the sides out of solid pine.
The case will be painted white. There are several knots on the pine boards. I have heard that knots will show through paint. Is there a good method of priming a knot before painting so that it won’t show through?

Tex,
There are special paints that include shellac and are alcohol based (fast drying) or you could just use shellac...
Tex, because the structure of the wood in and around knots is so different from the clear wood the knots will always eventually telegraph through. Shellac will stop most bleeding of resin that frequently oozes from near knots but the knot will eventually show through as an uneveness.
If you don't like the knots you'll need to buy clear lumber.

Thanks for the information. I will look into drilling them out and plugging before painting. No worry this way.
Lee,
On a side note, I was looking at a piece of Ikea furniture the other day and noticed how they hide defects in some of their furniture. They use an end grain plug made from a small branch! looks like a small dime sized knot in the wood, you could hardly tell without an up close look and a realization that the knot was PERFECTLY round.
Just in case you were wondering....yes it was a piece that I bought before I knew any better. On the other hand, it has survived 15 years of marriage and 6 moves (LA to Tucson to Nashville to LA). Not bad for an adjustable shelf bookcase bought in college!

Spray them with KILZ --a white shellac sealer.
Tex,
A recent (within 2 years) issue of FWW discussed this issue and showed how to drill out the knots and plug them with a shop-made plug. Do a search on knots.
