I’m planning to build a kitchen cabinet to house a double oven. The cabinet will be faced on one side with a veneer of bricks. Should that side of the cabinet be constructed of something other than standard plywood, or should the plywood be sealed in some manner before the brick veneer is applied?

Just ordinary plywood will be fine. It might be advisable to add a second layer of 3/4" plywood for stiffness. The masons will probably use thinset to attach the brick veneer to the plywood, basically like setting tile.

If it was me doing it, I'd probably fasten a sheet of 1/4" Hardibacker to the cab first. It's a more stable base for tile or masonry. Maybe not absolutely needed tho'.
If you're talking about that fake brick veneer, mastic should work fine over the wood (I'd rough it up first with sandpaper) unless it's near enough to the stove to get warm. If so, the heat may soften the mastic, so I'd go with the Hardi and thinset.

Thanks for the advice. The brick that is to be applied is real brick that has been sliced thin for this type of application. Using the Hardibacker sounds like good insurance for a trouble free installation.
Either backer or use exterior grade plywood. If you use a plywood with a thin surface veneer, such as baltic birch, it may delaminate from the moisture.--------------------------------------------------------
