Hi
I would like to hear some opinions on joinery for building a seemingly simple Ofuro. I will use Teak or Cypress probably 8/4 thick. Any ideas would be very helpful.
Here is a pic of a Ofuro for reference: www.rhtubs.com/images/hottubs/ofurowbench.htm
Thanks,
Chris

Here in Hawaii, I've built them with long dadoes to join the panels. ( run the side panels past the ends) If you make them fit fairly snugly, the wood will swell when wet to hold water just fine. The example that you showed appears to have mitered corners which i've never seen on the japanese ofuro here.
Good luck!

What type of finish do you use? Also do you account for minor leakage when planning installation...flashing underneath the tub? Thanks for your input.

Theres no finish at all on the traditional tubs..... what a maintenance saver!!!! The tubs swell tighter than a seal's,,,,, wait,,,,, I gotta think of another metaphor.... so theres no leakage that way, but there is plenty of water around when in use. They are generally set either outside or, if used indoors, on a tiled floor with a drain. This is pretty typical in the japanese bathhouse where the entire floor is built to drain.
