I’m just starting to look at reviews and recommendations on joiners. I don’t have an unlimited budget so as much as I would like the Powermatic 54A I’ll probably have to settle for something less. I’ve been reading about the Yorkcraft YC-6J which appears to be the same as the Delta 37-195. I can buy the Delta or Jet locally but like everyone else want to get the biggest bang for the buck. Any recommendations and opinions would be appreciated.

If you want the biggest bang for the buck, go for the Grizzly 8" jointer (note, it's jointer -- a joiner refers usually to a biscuit joiner). There are 3 models on this page:

Check with the search function here at Knots. You'll see several users who are quite pleased with the 8" Grizz. $695-$795 depending on the model. Frenchy is one who's really put it to the test!
forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The term "joiner" can also refer to a person that joins boards, and otherwise a word used in the U.K. and perhaps in other areas also to describe a cabinetmaker type .
happy jointing or should we say joining
Grizzly 0500 - 8", 2 HP, 75" long, quite remarkable fit and finish, especially given the cost: $795 plus $75 shipping anywhere in the US. Mine arrived in just a week in great condition, and the delivery guy helped me get it into the shop. Just tuning it now, but so far everything checks out and sounds sweet.
I know where you can buy the Delta 8" long bed real cheap. The local HD has 3 that's been setting for 2 years. They ordered them for a local high school and ordered the wrong ones. These are at the Katy TX Home Depot on I-10 and Fry road. About 30 miles west of down town Houston. If within driving distance then call the store manager first.

I have a Grizzly 6" that I bought 3 or 4 years ago and it has worked flawlessly as a hobby machine - couple hundred board feet each of cherry, maple, oak and poplar. Use it for both face and edge jointing. Only regret is that I wish that I had gone with an 8" or larger machine. Tool buying philosophy has changed from "what do I need?" to "what is the biggest thing I can drag home that I have electrical power for?" Have been very happy with purchases and outcome since changing buying strategies. :-)
The only knock I have against the Grizzly is that on the model I have, the fence adjustments are kind of primative, but I leave it locked at 90 degrees at maximum cutting width any way so that hasn't proven to be a limitation.
FX: Did you ask you industrial distributor if he would match the price on the internet? Remember a few things when buying on internet 1) how do you get it off truck?, most trucks will bring merchandise to end of trailer and its your responsible to get it off from there. 2) what if there is hidden damage, or machine doesn't work properly, who do call? unless theres an arrangement with internet company and repair station to fix unit, do they have home site service? or do you have to bring it there to get fixed? I've been in tool sales business for 25 years and heard plenty of horror stories of shipping problems and very unhappy customers, who are just trying to save a few dollars, in ths long run it will cost you more in time and dollars. Your industrial distributor is there to HELP you not over charge you for his time and service from the product you buy from his store. Also he'll have all the necessary accessories that you will need later to make your jointer a better tool, and he only a local phone call away. Good luck on your purchase.
