I made a small box for 3×5 cards (a batch of 3).
My wife said she wanted one… painted White… with a black Unicorn on top.
I primed & painted it white…
The inside lips where the Lid meets the main box was painted Acrylic Blue on the connecting surfaces as well as a small band going around outside edge (to cover up my slop over the outside edge).
On the Top, I drew a Unicorn using carbon paper, for the outline, THEN, I used a Permanent Marker Sharpie Fine Point pen to finish the Unicorn.
Everything was allowed to dry… close to 24 hrs.
I figured the Sharpie ink dried VERY FAST…
The Acrylic paint, I figured, would dry FAST (because it started drying before I was able to finish & had to add more)… Artist Paint from a tube.
Thinking EVERYTHING had dried good, & would’ve bet LOTS of MONEY that it was more than dry enough, I proceeded to give it a coat of water-based Poly.
To my surprise, BOTH started to blend with the Poly!!
I did my best to finish it up, to make it look as good as I could.
BUT, What BUGS the #$%^ out of me, WHY DID ALL OF IT RUN?!
Acrylic is supposed to dry like a thin film of plastic.
Sharpie Permanent Marking Pen is supposed to be Permanent.
What did I do wrong?
Maybe I should have sprayed the Poly… but I think it would’ve run a little that way too.
Is there ANYTHING that will NOT run?!
Thank you for your comments.

Well, thank you very much for your Help!
... yes, I'm being sarcastic...
Take it easy Joe. I am guessing that Peter is on vacation since he hasn't posted in awhile.
Even the experts deserve some time off.

Hi Rob,
First off, what are you doing at the computer at 3 am? Couldn't sleep? Thanks for piping in for me.
Vacation???? I'll need to look that word up although I've heard it in conversation at times.
Just to add a little more to the mix, we did a photo shoot here on Wednesday and Thursday for a Master Class article that will come out in issue 204 (I think)
Do I need to pay you a commission now?

How's it going Peter?
You should try the vacation thing every once in awhile. Just make sure you bring a laptop so you can still check in here. :^) Work is real slow for me right now so I am getting a chance to do some woodworking and late night web surfing. I actually was combining the two last night and came here while I had some time to kill in between applying a home-mixed oil/varnish and waiting to wipe off the excess. This is the first time I have used oil/varnish on a big project (9 drawer curly cherry and walnut dresser, with a small set of doors in the middle). I hope that the mixture I am using, about 60% and 35% BLO with a little mineral spirits, will give me a finish that won't need constant attention.
No need for a commission. The responses I make are worth exactly what the questioners pay for them.
Looking forward to seeing the Master Class article. Can you reveal the subject, or would you prefer to keep us in suspense?
Rob
Hi Rob,
Just for a little fun; I always wonder why about the mixtures. Why not just use something like waterlox which is only one can. Guess I'm just lazy but I haven't made an oil mixture in ............................
I am getting a few days off in November. A friend is launching on space shuttle Endeavor on the 14th and we've got invitations to the launch. Plus it's a night launch so it should be pretty spectacular. He's also doing three space walks on this mission. One thing we have in common is we're both goalies in hockey. I keep telling him it's about time we've got a member of the goaltenders union in space. I can't wait to see the camera footage from his EVA's.
Concerning the master class, it's different! That's all.
Keep in touch.
Peter
Little Joe,
What type (brand) of acrylic paint did you use? When I need to use an acrylic I use Golden brand. I'm not stumping for them but they are very good quality. I'll bet if you tried them you'll find they won't run when over coated.
As far as the sharpie; you used it to color in the unicon (am I right?). The sharpies may say permanent but will react to solvents such as alcohol and bleed. I don't definitively know the formulation of the water based poly but one of the components reacted with it.
Why not repaint it, use a pencil to outline the unicorn and then paint it in with a golden acrylic. I believe you'll be able to lay a coat of your poly on without problem.
My day job, also known as my own business, at times, takes precedence over these questions. I try and get to them as timely as possible but when a bid for a major project comes my way, obviously enough, I give it my full attention. That's between getting the work in the shop done and teaching a class on Tueday nights at the same time.
So thank you for your patience. That was sarcasm too.
Peter
Hi Peter & thank you for your reply...The acrylic is from some art paints... "Art Advantage artist tools" (conforms to ASTM D 4236, whatever that is). Just some stuff I happen to have... playing with artistic painting.Yes, I used the Sharpie to go over the tracing marks of the Unicorn. A Black-outlined Unicorn on a white background. The more I've been thinking & asking about it, I think I'd try spraying poly very lightly to get a gradual covering and when past that point, put on a heavier, normal, coat of poly. What do you think of that? The golden acrylic, you mentioned... is that a Brand of acrylic or the color 'gold' suggested? This is my First "ask the expert" usage... I had no idea of the time lapse to expect before receiving a answer... Thank you for taking time out from your Day Job to answer these questions.Joe
Hi Joe,
Even with a sprayed coat of poly you might get a bleed. It just may be the solvents at work. There's really one way to find out, do a couple of samples. It sure beats having to fix your projects.
For the outline you may consider using a black acrylic paint and an appropriate brush ( # 1 or 2). It will dry quickly as you know, so plan the outline with start and stop points. Or you may consider a drawing pencil. They have a thicker lead.
The brand of acrylics is in fact Golden Paints.
There are times I'm near the computer (like now) and I can bang out questions. FWW once had a woman call from Texas complaining that her husband asked me a question in the morning and here it was afternoon already and nothing. That was interesting.
Let me know how you make out.
Peter
Peter,While watching the Donna Dewberry, One Stroke Painting, TV show, she painted, with acrylics, onto some wood...When she was done, she said "Spray a protective coating(s) of Lacquer to seal & protect."Sounds like an easy solution to me...What do you think? Is this one of those "missing the forest for the trees" conditions? :) :)
Joe,
One way to find out eh? If you used the sharpies again I would worry that lacquer will make it bleed but other than that, it seems like a good plan to me. Plus it dries a whole lot faster than poly.
Let me know how you do.
Peter
Oh YES, the Sharpies... forgot about them... Maybe I should use Black Acrylic instead!I was just thinking about the acrylics that also bled...Yep... will try it someday...Thank you & have fun wherever you'll be for the next few days.
