I am in the process of gutting my bathroom and ripped out the CULTURED MARBLE vanity tops including the individual pieces of cultured marble back splashes. I was wondering if these were flat like granite to sharpen with. So I checked the flatness of the cultured marble with the largest engineer’s square I own (9″). I used feeler gauges and could not slip any it under the square. At first I thought this was great. As I thought more, I started to 2nd guess myself and wanted to get your opinion.
So what do you think…..is it flat enough to sharpen on?
Thanks for your input.

If you saw how these tops are produced, you would be suspect of any degree of flatness. These tops are typically poured into plywood forms, I have seen some tops warped and curved as much as 3/8" in 3'-0" yet somehow find their way into people's bathrooms. But, if they check out, they would probably be ok for sharpening. You have to remember we are doing woodworking here, and not machine work to the nth degree.... Just my opinion.

Thanks for the input. You are validating my initial thoughts. I think I may give it a try and if the results suck, It willjust do it again with a known flat surface.
Thanks again..

I started to 2nd guess myself .... LOL...
If it was FLAT using a GOOD edge and feeler gauges then it IS flat!
Marko, wet two pieces then 'wring' them together. If they cling together so much that you have to slide them apart, they are FLAT.
My choice would be a pane of 1/4" 'PLATE'glass
It's optically flat Steinmetz
I wonder, I have some porceline (sp?) tile - 12" x 12" is that "Flat"?Mark(I know, measure it with a micrometer :-)
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

Sorry to hear you have contracted Porceline Mark
Not to worry tho....They now have a cure for that.
Symptoms are needle like protrusions that interfere with shaving. It is especially bothersome when coming in contact with Velcro
and small nocturnal marsupials. It is not contagious, altho, young women and masseusses will avoid any close contact. A lot of Australian sheep herders contract a similar
affliction but the protusions are more wooley and smell awful when damp.
Conversly, Australian women and some Englishmen are attracted to it's 'heady' aroma. Steinmetz
I sed I dint nowe how to spel it. know cents in rubbin it in.is porcelain tile "dead flat" ?M.
