I was going through the wood pile out back and came across this piece. I thought you might be interested in seeing it.

LOOKS LIKE IT,S JUST ON THE OUTSIDE, YOU SHOULD OPEN IT UP SEE IF IT THE SAME INSIDE.
Now you've done it. I was just going to go on, but now I'm going to have to peel that bark off and see if anything is under there. I'm really thinking it is just on the outside but I'll find out.
It looks like a crustose lichen, but I have no idea what kind. The only ones that I've seen that are even remotely close to that color grow on rocks, not wood. Most woody-substrate lichens grow on either bark or decaying wood, but not both. Since this one is growing on the bark, it probably hasn't penetrated into the wood.

Allen,
Can't wait to see whats under here. It's a cherry burl that's been sitting outside for nearly 4 years.

Is there a fungoligist in the house?
Put it on your lathe, let's see what the colors are on the inside.
Tom
Grasshopper Tom,
Am familiar with Kung, ooopps sorry.
:-)

Kid.
The Kung are the Real People, probably ancestors of yours and mine, (I don't wanna hear back, "Ya ancestors of yours!") As such, they'd know all about funguses, since they're pretty healthy eating, except when they kill you. Did You Know- the reason they can use female pigs to sniff out that expensive underground fungus is because they smell like the pheremone that male pigs put out during mating season. It's the same chemical!
Sorry, I'm alittle naive, is that what you meant by Kung?
respectably,
Tom
Well, that was certainly one of the more interesting posts I read in here for quite some time. If I laughed I hope that was the right reaction.
My oblique post was referring to the Kung Fu TV series!
Sorry 'bout that,

Bob,
Thanks, yes you were supposed to laugh. Some say I have an eccentric sense of humor. Others say that I'm eccentric.
Anyway, Kung Fu was one of my favorite shows. The guy never hurt the bad guy directly, he used the bad guy against himself. Haven't seen a show like before or since. Eccentric.
No, dammit, Kung Fu was with the little kid and the elderly asian master. I'm thinking about an old TV show. Anyway, back to the shop.
I'm ruminating about posting something on what I've learned about red oak over the last couple months. But I've got a long to-do list.
Not to get back on the subject but working at the landfill certainly has its perks. That cherry burl would have been buried had it not been for the compactor operator. Several months ago I got 14 - 16' x 2" x 10" read oak planks that were once seesaws.
Enough plywood for 2 barns, about 2,00 sf of insulation, I lost count of the solid core doors. And that's just building materials and some nice wood. It's all coming to an end in Sept. though.
On to the next adventure.

Sounds to me like you have too much red oak. I've got a rocker for my daughter in law and four dining chairs comin up= why not send your excess down here?
Tom
Do you have a lathe for that burl? If not, you could send that too.

You say that as if retirement is a curse. I for one will be glad when I go to retirement!
I got to say G-d Bless you for the good natured help you've given me but you got to lay off the shellac thing, too much alcohol is not good for you especially if your driving that big pickup of yours and you come across a state trooper!
Chaim
Make your own mistakes not someone elses, this is a good way to be original !
Oh contraire monsieur (sp?),
I'm definitely looking forward to retirement, well partial retirement that is. The lament, if any, that I have is that I will no longer have access to all the cool stuff that comes in here.
It's mind boggling what comes into landfills, sometimes heartbreaking too. That old axiom about one mans trash......... Just the other day 2 loads of construction debris came in from an old house that was demolished to make room for a parking lot. Small unusable pieces were in one load - mahogany! Crushed by the excavator.
There otta be a law.........,Bob @ Kidderville Acres

Don't you get grandfathered in? You should have "first right of refusal" on anything interesting that comes in.

That's very true. I cant count the amount of useless junk that's made its way through my hands and into the hands of another (via the table saw) I recently came across a bed frame made out of teak and mahogany stained to match (as a secondary) what a find. people laughed, but I said junk, ha! its a valuable resource for people low on wood! and good wood at that!
Well all said and done something are just not worth the effort but occasionaly you get a find that's well worth any effort.
Here is just one example.

You mean a mycologist?
Yep! Same thing. Same root as mycelium. Which a fungus mainly is. What you see is only the fruiting body, the rest of the thing is threading its way into the wood, but not necessarily the same color. Ive seen even weirder colored fungi on ####. What they edited out is what fahmahs call horse manure.

Vulcan blood?
Say, I think that's a map of Indonesia !
Looks like something Dr. Zahe Hawas would have in the Ciro Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.
