Attic insulation. I am putting fiberglass type insulation in the floor of my attic. Am wondering if it should go backing side down (towards the warm house envelope) with the fuzzy side facing out towards the cold attic? Need to double check before I nail down the attic floor.
Thanks all, and Happy new Year!

Probably a question for FHB, but to answer; backing side towards the warm - fuzzy towards the cold.

BOB you are thinking about a woman again? Attic insulation should have no foil or paper as I recall. And the post about nailing down the boards/sheeting is about as bad! Just lay it down and try not to SQUASH the insulation! Someday you may deside you need more insulation and then a new floor to build on top of it!
Will,

I've noticed this happening since New Years! Any recommendations for a cure?

Generally, attic insulation is unfaced. Since you are laying it between the floor joists and not between the rafters/trusses it doesn't matter which way you orient it. The facings is for a vapor barrier, but with an attic having 2 gable end vents, a ridge vent plus soffit vents -- depending on how your house is constructed -- there will always be outside air moving through your attic. The facing is unnecessary. You could remove it if you like but you'll lose a little of the glass along with it.
Yeah. Thanks on that info. I've got to reshape this attic. It's got a ways to go. Thinking about puttin a fan in one end.

The paper is called a vapor barrier. In your application with no insulation down yet you can put the paper side down. If there is already insulation in place take off the paper!
Do not squeeze the insulation with the floor boards.. you will reduce it's effectiveness.
Okey, thanks. Think there might have been squirrels in there, as the old insulation is all torn up. I'll pull it out and start anew.
Cheers for the New Year
Mooshaba,
eliminate access for the squirrels first!
PS fiberglas is the worst insulation out there..
celliose is better and foam is better still.
Frenchy,
Interesting . . . Makes sense. Thanks for the info.
