When I was a kid I worked in a furniture store mostly unboxing stuff. Some things would come with a ding or two.
There was this really old gentleman that came in periodically to fix dings. He used these stick things (each one a different color) and and what looked like a soldering iron to burn it on. I remember the smoke stank like burning solder resin.
Any idea what that stuff was?

Sounds like carnuba wax sticks. I've seen them used on restoration work to carved oak panelling.
They could have been shellac sticks.

They are probably these:

Woodcraft sells them in packages of various colors to match different woods/finishes. I have never used them myself, but have seen them several times.

That's it. This is more of an after-the-finish repairing solution.
Guess I'll "stick" to my old excuse .. it's character.
Thanks folks.

Burn-in sticks. From what I've heard, it takes a lot, lot, lot of practice to get real good with 'em. Would be worth persuing if I was attracted to finishing work, but sawdust is my weakness.
