How to restore finish on this antique jelly cupboard
Hi,
We just bought this jelly cupboard. It was pretty black on the outside, obscuring the grain, so we tried to gently clean it using Murphy’s. Our goal was not to remove the finish–just grime.
First, the finish bloomed vaguely white. Then it just came of. With soap and water. Now we have a blotch on the piece that we weren’t expecting! You can see the cherry–and feel that the wood is now “naked”.
We’ll get some alcohol and laquer finish and test a corner. I’m guessing it’s shellac–given its age.
But we’re really quite perplexed as to why soap and water would remove finish.
Any ideas? We really don’t want to have to totally strip the blasted thing–especially given all the detail fiddy bits. But we would like to 1) even out the newly created light “naked” spot and 2) expose more wood grain.
Thanks,
Biz

Well, if the finish comes out with soap and water, you should contact the furniture store from where you bought it.
