Doug,
Any of the books by Pierre Ramond in the marquetry series, Silas Kopfs new book on marquetry and Paul Schurch has two small books and videos that explain the process well. Or take a week long class with Schurch to just start your learning.

There are also several good articles on the subject in back issues of FWW. I tried my hand at it many years ago, and while I can't remember what research I did, I'm assuming I dove in based on the articles, since I don't have a book on the subject.

Thank you all for the references. I will check them out.
Happy holidays.
