i spent five bucks for a box of 1 1/4" drywall screws at lowes. probably why the furniture i make is junk.
I found a place that sells them for $2 a pound no matter what length. For 1 5/8 I bought a 25# bucket which just happened to work out to $2.04 a pound. I probably grab 5# at a time at the discount store for each size when I need it. Going to be redrywalling my entire house this spring/summer/fall. Going to screw everything, so going to go through quite a bit of them.
As for furniture I used them on a platform bed where they can't be seen. But normally I just use them for shop projects. I use regular phillips head wood screws for any "good" projects.
I buy a box of drywall screws and it'll end up lasting me five years so I must not use them that much. In fact, the last time I bought them in bulk was about ten years ago when Furrows was going out of business. Paid about $.50/lb for a 3lb bag and still have the majority of them. I mainly use them for jigs and stuff. I know they're too weak to be used in furniture construction but sometimes I'll sneak some in for screwing in corner blocks and alike.... Just don't tell anyone.
> I use regular phillips head wood screws for any "good" projects. You should use slot-head screws. They're just as bad. ;) Andy
Mine is bigger than yours!
My father can beat your father up!
I'm sure that I now have enough McFeely's screws to last my lifetime and more. :;-)
