My Delta HCM broke in half. Literally. I’d cry but it was old and shot, and I smiled when it fell in half.
Got a new General tabletop model. Not perfect but worlds better than what I had.
I’m not overly impressed with the chisel quality. What do youse guys use?

I just got a ½" LV hollow chisel a while back and it's wicked nice. Cuts very clean.
Got the cones to sharpen all my HC's too. I've also heard from several Knotheads that they like the LV chisels. Not sure what different model HCM they fit though. The ½" fits my ShopFox just right.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
I'll have to take a look. Seems like they are either $15 or $100. Doesn't seem like much in between. Thanks for the tip.
I use CMT at around $12.95 for 1/4" with prices going to $25.00 for 3/4". But.. they have 3/4" shanks and not all mortisers can handle that a mine can. Excellent with a slight amout of honing.
The Lee Valleys are probably the best IMO straight out of the box.. an excellent job of machining done at the factory and made with metal that stays very cool over-all. They are a bit pricey but not Clico pricey as the Clico's (Sheffield England) run around $100 each over here. I here from someone in England they aren't that expensive over there. Big import fee I suppose. :>)
The Chinese and Taiwanese are what they are... cheap and require a lot of honing before the fact to get them up to speed. But.. they work once you do, but will over-heat eventually to the point they dis-temper and fade away. As I see them.. affordable now and disposable latter with another set replaceing them.
Just a matter of pay me now or pay me latter from what I have found!

Frankly, I've just gotten this mortiser in the last month and I don't know if it'll handle 3/4" or not. I'll look at LV though. I am generally happy with everything I get from them.

Sarge, that is just great advice! I wish I had 50 cents for every buck I blew 15 years ago on bad tools. Now, I only buy high quality. In the long run, its much less expensive!

We "all" probably which we could have done that to begin with as my pursuit goes back 36 years. But.. then again... you really don't know if you will stick with it and you often can't afford the best even if you do. So.. we evolve in essence into what we currently have I think and have that same wish about the evolution.
I have accumulated over 36 years and finally put things where they will probably be from this point forward. And there have been some major changes in the last 6 years with upgrades as mortgages, etc. were paid off. If you want to see my shop as it is this morning, look at the current thread, Which DP or similar. I just posted some pics of it at Old Fred's request as he saw pics for 5 years ago.
And.. if ya do look.... watch your step as the last thing I want to do at this stage of life is get involved in a home-owners liability suit. ha.. ha...
