A preliminary count puts Herbie’s age at 212 yrs. Like many towns in the US, Maine streets were once lined with giant American elm trees. The town I grew up in was known as Elm City. The towering behemoths formed an unbroken canopy over most of the streets and avenues. One by one these majestic trees fell to Dutch elm disease. Despite many efforts to save individual trees, the disease was unstoppable. As large, dead branches fell from heights of 40 ft. anything below was threatened and the trees had to come down. There was something about living in a town with these sentinels overhead. You felt their presence like wise elders watching over things. It will be a long time before/if younger generations will experience a similar city scape. http://www.yarmouthcommunityservices.org/Herbie.html

hammer,
An article about this tree appeared in our local paper here in VA last week. Also mentioned was the 101 yr old man who had been the caretaker of this tree, pruning diseased branches, etc, for most of his life.
Near me, on a country back road, is the hulk of what was undoubtedly, one of the largest oaks in the state. It was killed by overzealous state road workers who trimmed it to death. Sad when one of these old monarchs of the ancient forests dies.
