You have taken off the old finish and sanded it. Now you need some new finish to give some protection that will also liven up the wood color a lot. For a first project I'd recommend keeping it as simple as possible. That means a wipe on oil finish. Watco is a good brand as is Minwax. If you wipe the wood with a bit of paint thinner you will see about what color a clear oil finish will be. If that is still too light, then I'd get the Watco in either light or dark Walnut. You'll have to test in an inconspicuous place to see how this would turn out. If the test is "just right" make the first coat with the colored Watco, putting it on liberally with a rag and then wiping it off. If the dresser is oak, or another open-pored wood then keep coming back every so often for a few hours to make sure no oil bleeds back out of the pores. (This is about the only thing that can go wrong with a Watco oil finish.) Then you can put on several additional coats of clear Watco, about a day apart until you have a uniform sheen. After it has dried well for several days then you can put on a coat of wax. Should look really nice.
*THANKS SO MUCH Steve your a true blessing!I was'nt sure if I should just stain and sand and sand or wax and sand you made it sound so very easy i can tell you have lots of practice. I SHALL conquer this taskwith much more confidence! ksg
