Hi everyone. I’m a new member, so I thought I’d introduce myself. I received a gift subscription to FWW.com, so here I am!
I’m a self-taught, perpetual beginner, and commited amateur woodworker. I hope you’re a patient bunch! I look forward to learning from you all and seeing your work.

Welcome. What are you working on now?
Jim
Thanks for the welcome, Jim.
My project for immediate delivery is bubinga humidor. Boy, is that stuff hard to work with.
My current shop project is installing a switch in my router table.
My long-term project is learning to make chairs in the Sam Maloof way. I figure that will take only about 30 years or so. ;-)

Hi J,Welcome to the craziness. Sharpen yourself a chisel and sit right down!Rich

I am new here as well, and a long long ways from being able to help anyone, including myself, I am just learning, and I know why I waited half a century to start,....... $$$$...LOL It takes this long before you can afford to even dream. But seeing you were from home I thought I'd say ayuh to ya. I am from Laconia.
Exiled in PA at the moment, but developing land up in North Haverhill to move back in two years or so.
From what I have been reading, this is right where I need to be soaking up info, thanks guys, looking forward to spend time with ya.
I actually live in East Overshoe, 'bout six buckles up. Hmmmm, taint right but it's so.
I like it when new folks join in on the Knots festivities but most of the time they seem timid about asking questions. Ask away cause it gives folks the opportunity to present their views on thangs.
I spent the better part of my life working with computers - a black or white world if there ever was one. A bit is ON or it's OFF, nothing else.
Working with wood is like grey, not on and not off either, unpredictable at best. Whenever ye think ye got it down the wood throws ye a curve - sometimes literally.

My current shop project is installing a switch in my router table.
Use a foot switch! With a light or whatever indicator to tell you if the foot switch is on or off for the next time you want to start the router. The foot switch needs a base so it remains where you put it. Maybe a series table and foot switch for safety. I use both these days.
LOVE my routers! Hate it when one starts when I plug it in! Yes I have done that on occasions.. NOT GOOD!
Welcome! I have asked many stupid questions and got many good answers.

Don't forget to go over there to 'Breaktime' every once in a while. Although they can be kinda rough, they're not nearly as crude as the folks at 'CooksTalk'
By the way, the initiation fee is you have to become Dallas Cowboys fans.

Thats too much for me!Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Welcome, J.
While there are some real pros here, there are plenty of us perpetual amateurs, too.
Welcome to the forum. You'll find a wealth of experience, knowledge, passion and skill here balanced with a good dose of humour. You like bubinga? Have a look at this table I recently completed with another Knots member 43946.1. You can read the construction details on my site.

flairwoodworks, that is an awesome table! I was in the shop last night, working on the bubinga humidor. That's the most challenging wood I've worked with. I can't imagine trying to get that table top to look like you did. Well done!
JR
Thanks. It's my biggest (sized) project to date and the one I'm most proud of. The biggest project timewise is my workbench, which is 9 months in the making. I started it April 13.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com(soon to be http://www.flairwoodworks.com)

Welcome J,
If you really want to have fun, get really confused and quickly enter the world of woodworking here on Knots, ask any or all of the following questions:
what's the best way to sharpen?
what's the best brand of chisels to buy?
what hand plane should I buy first (second, next)?
is a SawStop worth the money?
does Lataxe need any more planes?
does buying the best tools make you a better woodworker?
This is a great forum, just don't take it too seriously. Good advice does abound.
Neil
Hey Neil, you forgot this one:
Which electrical breaker do I need to run my whatyamaycallit, and how do I install it?Woody
Woody, I don't even look at posts that mention electricity...'lectricity is like black magic or voodoo..I always call in the witch doctor (electrician) or my neighbor who somehow is not afraid of the current...
Neil
Yeah, I know, but nothing like a good electrical thread to liven up a slow day -- and get the blood flowing!Woody
JRreidy, Welcome. Mel has tons of patience and will be happy to answer all questions on all topics including woodworking . He is a master problem solver.
Secondly , should you desire short precise answers in a non diatribe form, direct them to Lord Charles Tauton crunk.
Good luck, lots of great people here.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. Funny about the 'lectricity. The finance department has authroized a subpanel and new wiring for the shop. Based on the comments here I think I might just save my questions for the electrician!
JR
Hi JR,
I'm another of you,--new,always a starter, got plenty of fool questions, but I have to tell you, you won't find a friendlier or more helpful lot anywhere than in these columns...amateurs OR professionals.
Welcome and as you will see a lot, have fun.
Robin
Forgot to add....
Down here we have a saying....."they don't call it electrickery for nothing!"
